Tips for Safe Sledding

  • Equipment: Sturdy shoes, snow-proof pants and jacket, gloves, helmet, and ski goggles.
  • Proper seating position: Hold the rope with one hand, grip the back of the sled with the other, and place both feet on the runners.
  • Braking: Place both feet next to the sled in the snow. The entire sole should be in contact with the ground. Lift the front of the sled with both hands and remain seated.
  • Steering correctly: Plant one foot firmly in the snow with your heel, lean your upper body into the turn. Use your left foot for left turns, your right foot for right turns.
  • Be considerate: Everyone must be considerate. Fast sledders of slow ones, and slow sledders of fast ones. Safety comes first!
  • Keep your distance: Don’t get too close to the person in front of you. Warn the person in front before passing.
